Yes, unfortunately, you should be concerned about this. I have a stinking heat pump too (I don't like it, can ya tell? hahahaha) and we do have emergency heat and it has been on more than off the past two weeks, I do not want to see my electric bill! The heat pumps are not made to work in below 25 degrees, when that happens, the heat strip (emergency heat option) needs to kick on to avoid the heat pump over working and breaking. You may need to call an HVAC co. and see if that option can be added. Or get plug in baseboard heaters from Lowe's to supplement so the heat pump won't break.

Our January temps so far have been 14 degrees below average, while last year we were 7 degrees above average during the same period.

FWIW, we're experiencing this extremely unusual cold snap due to the Arctic Oscillation, a much stronger-than-normal high-pressure system that's currently sitting over Greenland and diverting the jet stream's cold air southward:

Feeling That Cold Wind? Here's Why
It sure has been an odd winter for us already here in the Tri-Cities. Just caught the noon news weather report and they said during the rest of this week (Tues-Sat) we will go from a low of 7 to a high of 50. Now that is a big spectrum for 5 days!
