I woke up this morning to 6 degrees. I have not seen it this cold in a long time. The last time I believe, was about in 1985 when the temps got down to zero and stayed for about a week. My old furnance is working overtime. Is everyone staying warm?

It is ccccoooolllldddd! We are staying inside today. Supposed to be only high of 30ish for the next few days, lows in the teens. I believe this is pretty normal. We get at least one week a winter into the teens and even into the single digits usually. Last year I remember my husband saying " 7...it is 7 degrees out there!"
The good thing is that it never lasts very long and does warm up a bit during the day. At least we have had, and are supposed to get a bit more snow this year to go along with this bitter cold temps. To me, it is just not right to be this cold and not see some snow to go with it! hahahaha
We had almost an inch on the ground most of the day yesterday to go with the temps. It is gone today though. Might get some more on Tuesday and Thursday.

You guys can have all of the cold temps and snow we're getting in new york! I don't like snow or the cold and that is the biggest reason i want to move further south!

But the big difference Tom...it will be short lived. Calling for upper 40's by the end of the week. NY won't see that for 3 months.

We have Snow in Bristol! Sort of lazily drifting down at the moment, pretty to watch.
Have to drive home in the dark tonight though, so I hope the roads stay clear.

Actually that's a misconception. I grew up in Syracuse NY one of the snowiest cities in the country (average snowfall of about 120in of snow each winter) There is only about three months in winter that the temps stay below 40 but even then the high's are usually in the 30's during those months. The other difference is that NY knows how to handle winter weather. I was just there over the holidays and it snowed everyday but the roads were clear and managable each of those days. Just the threat of snow causes everything to shut down here which makes working and other daily activites very difficult.

Does anyone else have a heat pump that does NOT have an emergency heat option? Should I be concerned about this?

Yesterday (1/10) marked the 9th consecutive day that temperatures at the airport remained sub-freezing, making this the longest stretch since record keeping began in 1934. The previous record was 7 days, set in 1977 and 1982. We haven't been above 29 degrees since Jan. 1, though that may change today.

Our January temps so far have been 14 degrees below average, while last year we were 7 degrees above average during the same period.

FWIW, we're experiencing this extremely unusual cold snap due to the Arctic Oscillation, a much stronger-than-normal high-pressure system that's currently sitting over Greenland and diverting the jet stream's cold air southward:
