Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg is a rather short drive and lots of stuff to do if they are into bungee jumping, go-cart racing, motion movies, indoor ski diving etc. Also a day at Dollywood is always great if they like roller coasters and rides like that.

With the exception of Dollywood, the hiking and camping, all of that sounds like I'd be having a bad time. Point is, it's hard to make suggestions without knowing at all what your son is like...?

Oak Ridge is fun for the day. Sweetwater has a nice car museum and a store that has all those products you see on TV "Not sold in any store".

UT is always having something for students; take a look at the campus paper (and not just where the parties will be... ).

There are 6 pages of events in Tennessee in March on the Tennessee Vacation website. I don't know what a 19 year old likes to do but I'm sure he can find something. The little map next to each event shows if its in East, Middle or West Tennessee.

Tennessee Vacation - Calendar

You can also navigate on that same website by areas of interest (music and arts, attractions, sports and recreation, history and heritage, afritourism, nature and outdoors) to find permanent places to visit/things to do like parks and museums, for example.
