My younger brother just moved to Las Vegas and is looking for an entry level IT job. Studying computer science in college but has no work experience.

Even if he can find a job in Vegas, he'd do much better in the bay area.

If you mean San Francisco, he hates California.

California, especially Silicon Valley, is the mother church of our IT industry, the goose that lays the golden eggs for our nation. To hate that state, the state that is the foundation of our IT wealth, is to cut off one's nose to spite their face. But, okay, c'est la vie, there are large hives of IT activity in many cities; Denver-Boulder-Golden is one, Seattle, Boston, the entire DC area, central NC, Atlanta, Dallas, Austin, and many other big cities. I'm not sure much IT is in Las Vegas as an entertainment mecca, but if so that's cool.

Yep, I know a lot about Silicon Valley. It is the tech capital of the US. He hates California because of the politics there. But the question becomes: do those cities outside of Vegas offer work-from-home jobs.

Silicon Valley broadly speaking is responsible for the engineering & creation of products used IT employees for end customers. Silicon Valley is great for product design, design engineering & product management -- but those are not really IT jobs. Those companies do have IT departments to manage the information infrastructure of the company, but that is no different than managing the information infrastructure of companies across the nation.

I know what your saying, but it sounds like the kid looking for the job is a blank slate with a CS degree. The OP may be using IT as a catch all term for any computer technology job.

That being the case, the kid is probably better of starting his career in Silicon Valley, and getting himself established. Then he can take remote jobs and move wherever he wants. If he really wants internal corporate IT, he could go that route directly, or follow the technology experience he can get in Silicon Valley in that direction. In either case, I'd be he'd be much better off career-wise in Silicon Valley than Vegas, even if he likes Vegas as a location better.

No one needs to go to Silicon Valley to get a head start in IT.

In fact, unless you already have a connection or have a lead from one of the preferred schools that the Silicon Valley clique tends to come from you will find yourself being used up and thrown away within a year. Not to mention it's incredibly expensive and entry jobs are basically minimum wage in SV. Many of the major tech companies have offices out in Las Vegas so moving would probably put OPs brother at a disadvantage long term.

IT covers a HUGE area of talents and skill sets. What you have or might be geared for is going to greatly shift what kind of job is even available. Getting a job either with a company that has positions you prefer in Tech AND is the most convenient to get to. Look at what's realistic for getting the foot in the door and you will be able to make it there and back faithfully. Don't be afraid to apply for an non-tech job in a tech-heavy company; those jobs are the best because you can learn without pressure and build connections without feeling competitive.

Recommend looking at a tech/IT recruiter or a Staffing Agency. They are excellent at finding you jobs that work for filling up your resume and helping you get your foot in the door. In my experience most major well-paying companies get temps to screen potential hires over hiring through their resume process. In the meantime building relationships with professionals in all areas that can build your skills in a well-rounded way is imperative. Ask advice from professors and look for a mentorship that can give advice (not work) regarding the expectations.
