I'm in an F-1 visa and I've applied for a grader job. I've been studying for more than 1 year at college. It's been 17 days since I applied for SSN and I've not got it yet.
What could be the reason?
Also, can I start working before I get the card?

17 days is nothing for a bureaucracy; unless you were told differently, I would not worry till a month has passed.
Yes you can work without the SSN if your visa allows you to work. Many employers will not take you without a SSN though, as it makes their paperwork more difficult.

Well, one reason could be if you live in Alaska. I've got a green card, but it took me 2 months to get the SSN due to bureaucratic and postal system errors.

Hello.
How long does the ssn take to be available as in being able to use it? The reason I ask this question is because I went yesterday to apply for new Ssn with EAD and today I went to transfer all my contributions from itin # to my social. The clerk gave me a printout paper with my new ssn. Can I use it now? Or should I wait for the card? And how long does it take for ssa to validate the new ssn? Thanks in advance.

In Average from 4 - 6 weeks after you've received your Approval (I-797)
If you're lucky enough, you might get it in 2 weeks.

FNU stands for first name unknown, and is used for cultures where they do not use first names.

Do you have a first name, even one you use in conversation? If someone introduced themselves and says "Hi, I am John Smith, what's your name?", what do you say? Use that name if you have one. Otherwise, just use your lat name.
