Scientists citing new research say an earthquake fault along the Los Angeles coast, previously believed to be dormant, is active and could cause a destructive 6.4 magnitude earthquake if it ruptured.

And if it linked with other faults, it could trigger an earthquake in the magnitude 7 range, according to a team of researchers from Harvard, USC and the U.S. Geological Survey.

That makes sense. It was very brief. I was listening to bass-heavy music at the time, and I first wondered if the music jumped in volume and caused the window noise. I am glad I wasn't sleeping, because that would have been scarier.

It was shallow. That's why 3.8 felt stronger -

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A 3.8-magnitude earthquake struck the View Park-Windsor Hills area of Los Angeles early Wednesday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake hit just after midnight at around 12:03 a.m. Wednesday and was centered about 2 miles from Baldwin Hills and Inglewood. It had a depth of 7 miles.

There were no immediate reports of damage in the area.
