You could say that to a certain extent. Both have their share of dangerous areas (West Oakland = North Long Beach?), gentrified/wealthy/hip neighborhoods (Rockridge = Belmont Shore?), and both have downtowns with tons of potential that are coming along but just aren't quite there yet (although Long Beach is farther along and much more interesting IMO).

Here is Clifton's Cafeteria in downtown Los Angeles. I used to eat there all the time when going to USC. The outside was really wild, they had a real waterfall at the center. The inside was like a two storey jungle. I think the place is still open but the city finally got them to remodel the front. There were two Clifton's, I remember one had a stage with 'Hawaiian' dancers and the other one had stuffed animals and waterfalls and lots of trees and plants inside.

When I lived in L.A. then Pasadena and Arcadia I would go to the Huntington at least once a week. It goes to show you what someone with an enormous amount of money (the Huntingtons) can do for the public instead of giving it to heirs that spend it all.

you can see that LA's skyline has gotten denser with new additional buildings added to the skyline. You can see LA Live to the left and a couple of other newer buildings in the closer up left most edge of the skyline. I have plenty more pictures to show.
