so I am trying to be realistic. Some entry positions in the game industry pay $10/12/hr in the LA area. I live a frugal life: always eat home made meals, I bike a lot, no extra expenses besides a concert ticket once in a while and money for gas and rent.

what areas could I afford for a decent living? I'd like to live in a safe area, I don't need anything fancy or too big. I could share a 2br apartment or 1br eventually.

I am just curios how people with entry position jobs deal with the high cost of living and little paycheck.

I know it's a general question and LA is huge but maybe there are other people on this board who make little money.

thanks

It's called having as many roommates as it takes to cover the rent. On $20,000/yr, you can afford up to $550/mo on housing. Do the math.

For a rent of $550/month, look for shared rentals on craigslist (scary) or studio apartments from either Craigslist or westside rentals.

Or else there is always the pennysaver. http://www.pennysaverusa.com/search....les+County,+CA

I have seen studio apartments in there for $550 or less. Good luck! And don't rent anything unless you have checked it out with your own eyes.

Not worth it. LA is NO fun if you are broke.

No.

They don't. They live with family. Or in bad conditions.

You can try to rent a room in a house, but even then I bet you will need to pay $600 a month.

you would probably have to live in a co-op or some such thing. It is hard to live anywhere on $20,000 a year, but in Ca not a chance.

I am still trying to figure out how to do it on $50 an hour. But then I have 6 kids. One good thing is my wife works in Nursing. But then she only works a couple 12 hour shifts a week.

Most people that make that kind of money in LA find friends and relatives to get a place with. You'd be amazed how many people can be jammed into a house or apartment. I'd wager a good portion of LA residences exceed the capacity of people allowed to live there. My neighbors had about 5-6 people living in a 500ft studio apartment for awhile until they got evicted.
