I work in Comptom. I was also suprised because I hand't spent any time there. It has a casino, Best Buy, B Of A, TGIF, Target, etc. Looks pretty good at first. But buidlings can be deceving in So Cal. Walk into the Target or B of A. You then know you are in the ghetto!

[LEFT]You wanna see ghetto? Go to Cleveland, OH or its eastern suburb of East Cleveland, OH. Take a stroll down any side street off of Madison Ave or Clark Ave.on the west side and just about EVERY WHERE on the eastside of Cleveland is raw HOOD. Google map some of the addresses list below.

Eastside: 2182 E 78th St, Cleveland, OH, United States
8104 Cedar Ave, Cleveland, OH, United States
2836 Cedar Ave, Cleveland, OH, United States
1788 Hayden Ave, East Cleveland, OH, United State
14100 Strathmore Ave, East Cleveland, OH, United States
Westside:
3384 Fulton Rd, Cleveland, OH, United States
6016 Wakefield Ave, Cleveland, OH, United State
2088 W 106th St, Cleveland, OH, United States
Leeila Ave / Bellaire Rd, Cleveland, OH, United States
3108 W 48th St, Cleveland, OH, United States

I can randomly plop google's orange little guy on just about any street in "Da Land" and it's not gonna be pretty. Compton may be violent but they live a lot nicer than the people in Cleveland who are pretty violent too. CLeveland was dubbed the poorest city in the USA a few years back and is always in the top 10 on that distinguished list.

I don't call too much of anything a "ghetto" anymore after visiting the Southside of Chicago last winter. It was...depressed to say the least. Compton has some very nice upper middle/middle class areas. The bad rap it gets is more hyperbole rather then fact--aesthetically anyway. It's definitely not "a war zone" as I have heard it described. My paternal grandmother and step-grandmother both reside in Compton and maybe it's just because they have large, well maintained houses, on ny streets but it's really very nice over there.

Compton is by no means "ghetto" in appearance. By the looks of it, it's just another working/lower middle class neighborhood, which would probably look (minus the palm trees) like an middle-upper middle class neighborhood in Sweden. However, looks can be deceiving, and if I was in that area at night, I would be a little ways from fearing for my life.

The housing projects the OP posted look a bit like the "projects" in the U.S. Many of the worst, such as the Pruitt-Igoe and Cabrini-Green apartments, have been razed or mostly razed. Others, such as the Riverside Plaza (once known as the "Crack Stacks", now known as "Little Somalia") still stand.

I drived through alot of streets including the whole Compton Avenue and I just gotta ask if Compton has looked like this all the time or it has just gotten alot better over the last few years?

I mean, we have tons of hoods in SWEDEN (EU) that is far worse than Compton and the whole South Central, and many of them we don't even call ghettos.
1st of all, Sweden isn't hard. If you lived (not flew by on an airplane or whizzed by in a speeding taxi) in Compton in it's "heyday" I guarantee that you personally, would be a. a victim and/or b. scared to leave your house at night. At 900+ murders (not some corny little petty crimes like theft, rape, crack sales, accidents, cats stuck in trees)--I'm talking MURDER as in cold blooded KILLINGS-- a year in LA County, let the facts speak for themselves.

Exactly what you said though.. in it's "heyday" .. places change
And even then it was a different kind of ghetto.
I once saw a documentary I think it was the show "Gangland" and one of the shows was New Orleans before Katrina.. a certain area made up of a few blocks.. it was just bombed out looking apartment buildings and lots.. and just people everywhere. That is more what I picture like the others said Chicago or Detroit.. shelled out buildings and absolute decay.
