Question on Camp Taylor (Louisville, Jeffersontown: to rent, low crime, mortgage)

My husband & I are moving to Louisville and we are not from the area. We are moving with 2 small children and are thinking about Camp Taylor, but I just want to be sure it is safe. From what I can tell, even though it is low cost, it appears to have a relatively low crime rate. And I like that it is near the airport. We have no family in the area and want to be close to the airport. And it looks like there is a Kroger nearby. It's right near 264, so I feel like we could get around town easily if wanted to go out (but with 2 small ones, we don't go out much). We will probably be working on the north side of Jeffersontown (near Papa Johns Headquarters), anyone have a guess on commute time? Google says 20-30 min.

We just want to live there for a couple years and then use the property as a rental. This will give us some time to save money and then we can move to somewhere that may be a little more desirable to us. Since we are only planning to stay for a couple years and our children are still very little, we are not concerned about schools in the area. Which leads to my next question, is it difficult to rent property in Camp Taylor? I was thinking, it's close to the airport, not too far from University of Louisville (or Churchill Downs), so, it would not be hard to rent, is this correct? Or do people tend to avoid this area? I know nothing about Louisville, except what I've been researching online, so, any advice related to these questions is much appreciated.

It's fine. Not a perfect area but a bit up and coming. Definitely not dangerous. To be honest, though, for just a bit more you are better off closer to Audubon Park and better built homes too. Look at the area from Audubon Park north to Texas Ave, west to I-65, and east to Preston. You can find a really nice 3 bed brick for 165k if you are patient enough. The difference in mortgage between 120 and 165k is honestly enough to worry about. I'd go with a slightly better neighborhood with better built homes and more upside.

I used to work next to Camp Taylor and was back in town a few weeks ago. I think it is one of the lesser known areas of the Ville, which is a plus when it comes to safety. I’d have no issue with living in that area and actually think it is a solid affordable area to buy property.
