Sounds like a good middle sized city that is a bit more progressive of an island in an otherwise super conservative state.
The state of Kentucky spends too much money on failed economic schemes for rapidly declining areas of eastern Kentucky that have an out-migration of people, while not spending tax dollars in the correct areas for economic development and infrastructure improvements within the Louisville to Lexington corridor.

We visited Louisville for the first time this past weekend (quick trip up I-65 from Alabama) and really enjoyed it. We really liked Old Louisville, the pedestrian bridge across the Ohio, and the Muhammad Ali Center. The bourbon bar scene entices me for a return in the future! I will say it was surprisingly quiet, but the weather was pretty chilly, and I understand that things ramp up soon for the Derby. Overall, the low-key, historical vibe (without being overly gentrified and modernized) was very enjoyable.

It was also the St. Patrick's day parade Saturday so a huge chunk of the energy was in the Highlands and NuLu which were packed. Next time you come back check out the Highlands restaurants and bars. They stay pretty busy even on off weekends. Downtown usually isn't busy unless there's conventions/events. Though you are correct being chilly sure doesn't help.

To the NYT, the more gay the better. That's how they judge people and places.

In 1995, the Sunday NY Times magazine did a big 'special' on sports. I bought it (I stopped buying the Times long before that) because the New York Rangers had just won the Stanley Cup and I was interested in what they would say about hockey. The sports special was 10+ pages long and the word 'hockey' did not appear in the entire feature. Not once. But - they had 1 1/2 pages about lesbians in sports. That is the New York Times in a nutshell. They view everything through their liberal prism.

By the way, I used to travel to Louisville for business and I always liked it. Lots of good restaurants and lots of good people. Were they gay? I neither knew nor cared.
