Googling doesn't seem to come up with any specific ordinance on this. Called 2 days ago MPD and they weren't sure and are supposed to call back.

Anyone aware of the legalities here and whether it's enforceable?

Yes it's illegal. There are very few places you can camp here

I Googled "camping Maui" and found some various websites. One which has information on Federal, State, and County campgrounds is called mauiinformationguide-dot-com, then go to "accommodations" and then "camping". Like Wink said, not much legal camping available.

I found this on a site called "Aloha Campers": Please note that the County of Maui and State of Hawaii campgrounds require permits obtained in advance by mail or walk-in from their offices. No permits can be obtained at the campsites and you will be asked to leave if you don’t have one. Making arrangements before your visit will help make your vacation more pleasant.

Looks like roadside camping is not allowed. I would suggest calling the PD again, just to be sure.

People camp at Kanaha Beach Park in an area set aside for camping. Some look to be homeless people, some are visitors. Not sure on permits. Nice setting though, right on the beach.

Of course there is always the jungle, which on the North shore there is lots of. Might be a tad dicey though.

Here's a website that has what appears to be a pretty comprehensive list of places to camp on Maui. They all require buying permits in advance.

You don't want to camp at Kanaha. It's basically a homeless camp. I worked on mapping the infrastructure when I worked for the county, and one of the senior lifeguards complained to us about the homeless meth users that live there. He couldn't understand why they weren't cleared out.

Camping in the jungle should be out of the question, especially now with two women disappearing on the North Shore within a couple months, plus several other disappearances up there over the last few years.

Sorry I missed the tongue-in-cheek emoticon. Which one is it?

This isn't a joke... Every one of the mysterious disappearances over the past few years has taken place up there in the North Shore's jungle. Maybe it's the pakalolo farmers, or maybe it's the people who strip cars and cook meth out there. Either way, to think of it as a safe area is naive. Come to think of it, the North Shore of Maui is the only place I've actually been assaulted in my entire life.

To be accurate, one lady went missing in Kahului. And Charli looks like it could be something other than a random act, IMHO. And she was driving on the Hana Hwy when she was last seen. Only one missing person - Vogel - was camping. But that being said, I do not recommend anyone camp in any jungle.

Default locals do it...

You can try out a few areas on Sugar Beach north of the resort. Pull off the road. Locals snag 'em up all the time for extended weekends and holidays. I don't think it's illegal, but you never know. Careful of the thorns from the trees though, they're nasty. It should be OK and you're right at the waters edge.
