There's a roped off area at Punalu'u for the turtles to sleep in. Saw a tourist try to walk across that area and he almost walked on a turtle since when they are sleeping they do rather look like large smooth rocks. The life guard and three other tourists scolded the person for almost stepping on the turtle, but nobody mentioned fines. The turtle didn't wake up so it was all good.

Exclamation Turtle Soup?

A couple months ago over at Kam2 about 20 people (tourists?) were surrounding a turtle to take photos, etc. Yeah, I get it: they're amazing and you don't see them at home. I actually got afraid for the tourists because they weren't watching the waves, slipping on the rocks, etc.

I mentioned this to the lifeguard who said, "Well, it's their vacation let them enjoy it." To which I responded, "Well, I thought one wasn't supposed to surround the turtles and harass them." Then he said, "Oh, because turtles have rights? Yeah, they have rights...they have the right to taste good in soup!"
