I would think spending all day in the bathroom from having drunk six cups of coffee would be depressing...
(When they say "six cups," do they mean actual cups, as in the measurement {8 oz.}, or six cupfuls {many coffee mugs hold 12-16 ounces}?)
But the other question is... have they made concessions for other possible factors? Does more coffee cause depression, or do depressed people drink more coffee because they don't sleep well, feel stressed out, feel sluggish, etc.?

Good questions The article doesn't really elaborate, does it? But a quick google search revealed that caffeine consumption could make depression worse in people who already have mood disorders.
Here's the link to the actual article: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.psychres.2023.115307 It's hard to say, based on the data, that coffee consumption causes depression and anxiety, or simply that people who participated in the Biobank study who reported high coffee consumption also reported depression and anxiety.
I once dated someone who was addicted to coffee. That was depressing. His daily routine of not being able to function without a steady diet of coffee became unbearable and dragged me down.
Never trust a (java) junkie!
