I really have an issue with envy. People who make more money than me (or have better careers) or who travel very often to wonderful places or people who live in 'amazing' places with near perfect weather all year long. And so on. I simply struggle with envy of others and i know it's a total waste of energy and time.

How to overcome this and just be happy with where I am in life? I also struggle with the whole thing of FOMO (fear of missing out). Uggg.

Put the energy you waste on envy to work. There are a number of web articles about turning envy into inspiration. Here's just one:

You might try to concentrate on the opposite of envy. Develop gratefulness for what you have and generosity to serve/help others. Aim for doing this serving/helping unconditionally. Just do your best, trying again and again is all you need to do.

Great thread. It's great that you are aware of this and try to change for the better. Good for you.

I'll go with the essay, "I.Don’t. Care." by Jack Donovan. It's a direct outcome from Stoicism: "When life hurts more, care less." Those are only words and putting it into action took a while.

I'm a competitive person and burned out on my favorite hobby last September when I allowed my envy (competitiveness) to get the best of me. I had to step back about ten days and mentally re-center. Faithful friends were supportive. Rivals found it amusing to torment, but that's okay too: good to know who they are and I do need to have a few competitors handy to struggle against. Only ten days later I realized how much it didn't matter, and resumed as if all was normal. Just at my own pace, not that of others. When bested by opponents, I'd shrug, smile, and move along until the next time. It also helps to realize that flak comes from below, never above, so let others burn their energy caring about what you do. Study and emulate those who perform better, and: don't get mad, get even, by bettering yourself.

I don't think we're ever cured of these feelings, but it helped to put everything in proper context. Life's gone far better since. Since "I don't care (anymore)," it's a sure bet others have better things to worry about than my performance as well.
