I was never a big fan but I'm remembering a night run with one of my buds, now. Did you ever go to Oktoberfest? I see that you're not a big fan of the beer.. I appreciated it, I guess I should say, but I didn't drink much.. it was very different from the watered down American version (rice at the bottom of your glass).. though there were plenty of runs to the local Esso for a crate or two of those as well. Great times, definitely.
The beer (OMG)...I forgot that instead of 5-6% they were more towards 16-18% and at 4am when I was praying to the porcelain g_d I knew it was something I would never forget.

Germans are less rude than they were 20 yrs ago. I guess they've gotten used to having foreigners "occupy" their country - Germany has a lot of "auslanders", too - like most of the European countries. I first came here in 1970s, now I'm here in 2009. Nowadays, more Germans seem to speak english and get a long better with Americans , imo.

Yes, the beer was stronger.. lol! We went on a road trip to a brewery that was hours away because they specialized in a certain beer that was even stronger than average! I don't remember the brand, now.
and.. Individuals that I met were friendly when I was there from 97-99. I was under the impression that they are taught English (formally) in their childhood educational programs.

We have been in Germany for 20 years (I'm a contractor with the Army) and live in Mannheim. The time is coming soon when we must leave and it will be a sad day. We have become "europeanized" and now the US seems foreign to us. I will miss the clean streets, parks, being able to walk anywhere in complete safety. In twenty years the power has gone off once for about an hour. Things work here. People keep appointments and don't come up with lame excuses when they come up with a better offer ("a prior engagement"). I will miss being able to escape gangsta music by just tuning in a classical or golden oldie station. I will miss civilization.

As for Germans being unfriendly, I have found that the further away from an American military base you get, the friendlier the Germans are. Sixty years of bad behaviour is a hard act to follow.

That might have been EKU Bier brewed in Kulmbach.

FlaGrrrl; wife was a tour escort for the rec center several years. We did Oktoberfest more than a few times! After the first couple of trips; we took the clients to the Theresienwiese, gave them an orientation and let 'em go. Then we toured the rest of the city.

I do love German wine, though. (Wife grew up on the Mosel!) Even got to help with the grape harvest and appreciate it even more.

True fact: Bitburger Pils Brewery has a pipe that goes directly to Bitburg Air Base! (The rest of the story is that the base buys the waste hot water from the brewery for the housing area heating plant. Makes for a good come-on, though!

Mosel wine is my preference as well. In Summer, 1976, I started in Trier and walked/hitched along the Mosel to Koblenz. Had the chance to taste various great wines along the way, but the best time was at a wine festival in Klusserath. Also enjoyed Bitburger at many Gasthauses.

Yes Visvaldis.. I think you nailed it! EKU28? That was a fun memory.. lol. A group of us were all hanging out (doing god knows what) and someone comes in and says-- hey guess what I heard... lol. We got a vehicle, not really knowing where we were going, and that was our personal quest. We were not going to be denied, lol.

Hey there, Padcrasher & Bideshi.. good times :-)
