FlaGrrrl; wife was a tour escort for the rec center several years. We did Oktoberfest more than a few times! After the first couple of trips; we took the clients to the Theresienwiese, gave them an orientation and let 'em go. Then we toured the rest of the city.
I do love German wine, though. (Wife grew up on the Mosel!) Even got to help with the grape harvest and appreciate it even more.
True fact: Bitburger Pils Brewery has a pipe that goes directly to Bitburg Air Base! (The rest of the story is that the base buys the waste hot water from the brewery for the housing area heating plant. Makes for a good come-on, though!

I never really experienced a lot of German wine.. I do remember gluvine. I think this was warmed and served at Christmas?
Oktoberfest was fun. Huge beer tents.. people copped a squat and couldn't be budged all day! Slabs of meat to snack on.. and a mass of people. I remember moving within a group of people and realizing that everyone was stepping over this guy passed out underneath our feet. They had a couple good amusement rides, too. I wasn't expecting that.
My family was stationed at Wildflecken from 83-89?

All our neighbors were great.Im missing alot about germany.

I was stationed in Illesheim from 1980-82 with the 1/6th Infantry. I am stationed in Iraq now and took R. and R. and took a trip down memory lane. My wife and I went back to Illesheim yesterday. I could hardly recognize the place. I met the Daughter-in Law of the woman we called the "Brochen Lady. They run the small Backerie in town.
The Culin bar which was behind the Bahnhof is closed now and has became a church.
We are staying in Bad Windsheim and took a trip to Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber and bought a Coo Coo clock which I had wanted since I was stationed there. Today we will be heading back to Weisbaden for a couple days, then back to Iraq.
We were at Bitburg from '86 -'94. Was a sad day to see it (partially) close. I'm not sure I'd recognize all the road improvements since we left! At least getting back & forth between the two bases sounds easier now. I wrecked my car on B 50 the day before the air show crash at Ramstein. We would've been there, otherwise...
The Eifel was a wonderful place to live & work. We miss the restaurants and the people we knew in the area, too!
We just left Germany a few months ago. We were stationed at Spangdahlem and loved it.
We miss it A LOT!

Their family was our family and they made the assignment even more special. After all of these years, we are finally going back over to visit them this summer and can't wait.
We are also very excited to show our now grown kids around the area but as my dh and I talk about it, we are not sure just how different we will find it. We plan trips to Trier, Rothenburg, a wine probe and visit to Bastogne. We want to spend as much time with our German family as well so are planning to stay in that general vacinity for the 8 day visit. Are we fogetting about something else we should show the kids?
Step daughter and family were in Giessen with her hubby who was an MP there. They said it was nice but they were ready to get home! I actually mailed her 2-2 liter bottles of Dr. Pepper from here in the states! Lady at the post office thought I was crazy! Bottles made it fine! We spent 2 weeks visiting with them.

Irisheyes13, sure hope you and yours enjoy your trip to Germany! You'll find it's a lot easier to get around in the Eifel, for sure. I've seen some of the new roads and some were built after I left. The operational side of Bitburg was returned to the Germans and is now an industrial park. There may be changes from the last time I was there, but I remember the base chapel was converted to a disco (sure was weird seeing "Bitburger Pils and "Coke" signs next to the stained glass!)
Gee, there's SO much to suggest, I don't know where to start. Perhaps take a Rhine River cruise from Rudesheim or somewhere nearby and go up to Cologne. Heidelburg. King Ludwig's castles in Bavaria (especially Neuschwanstein!) Luxembourg City & the American Cemetary where Patton is buried. That's just for starters...

Thanks Crew Chief! That's pretty funny about the base chapel. We'll have to check that out.. We are going later in the summer so I will let you know how the trip goes.. We are enjoying the planning part now!
