That looks like the ones growing in the swamps down there. I was pretty amazed to see that they were there the first time I went.

Its a shame to chime in on page 4, but when you have good jokes, you gotta use em.
YES MS has palm trees...they truck em in every few years and plant them near the beach
where they soon die.
The beach in Mississippi is a disaster. It is flat enough to lounge on, packed tight as clay,
and has many oddities in it owing to the fact that it is pumped up onto the land every year
or so, catfish heads, clay pot shards, glass, gold doubloons, all kinds of junk. It is a good
spot to metal detect, since as I said, the beach used to be out a few hundred yards as the
bottom of the gulf. And not in the way it was in Destin. But the beach in MS is CLOSE to the
good beach, it just isn't the good beach. The various black rivers of MS and LA drain into it
in the area, making for a light brownish green water that is not something you will see on a
postcard. Again, the sun DOES SHINE and the sand is FLAT and you can have some fun there,
but it is not really much of a beach. But there are casinos, good restaurants, friendly people
and fun to be had there. It can't all be about the beach or it would never make it. You need
to ride through Alabama to get to a good beach in FL.

MS's coast has a lot of good selling points, some of the best hunting and fishing in the world,
great food, good climate, brilliant sun and good fun. But the beach is one star out of a possible 5.

If states like Louisiana and South Carolina have palm trees, then one can assume that Mississippi (or at least South Mississippi) will have them too.

My wife and I just returned from the Mississippi Gulf Coast. We seen not only palm trees, but lemon and orange trees. Banana plants too, but they were not in great shape. The lemon and orange trees were good though.

This photo dates back five years, but does show palm trees in the Mississippi landscape. Of all the Southern states, Mississippi seems to have the least palms, even though its climate extends into Zone 9. The reason why someone else might know...

There's a couple of palm trees of some sort planted on the south side of the Aquatic Center at Delta State in NW Mississippi:

Google Maps

There are several types of hardy palms that can be seen in Mississippi.

I don't get why there are so many negative comment about MGC beaches. Ive been to beaches in Miami, Ft Lauderdale, Myrtle Beach, Tampa, Sarasota, and parts of AL. IMO, MGC is up there with the best of them.

To each his own, I guess...

The nice thing about Mississippi Gulf Coast beaches is that they are not blocked by a wall of concrete like Alabama.

Apparently when the courts determine the BP oil spill settlement amount, Mississippi is going to use its money to move the railroad tracks north of I-10, which will enable the state to build a new road running parallel to the coastline where the tracks are currently.

That will enable them to convert the beach highway to a slower, quieter, more scenic and landscaped road, more conducive to condos across the road where people can cross over to the beach without worrying about the traffic.

I also read the state is buying the rest of Cat Island. I wish the state would run top of the line ferries to all the islands and between the islands, e.g. from Cat to Ship to Horn Islands, to really show off Mississippi's actual Gulf beaches with clear gulf water and waves. Mississippi would be a true showplace and unique with unique coastal cities and pristine undeveloped yet accessible island beaches.

They should write a check for everyone in Mississippi as an economic stimulus.

You gotta be kidding. The Mississippi beaches are on a sound and the water is brackish and still. IMO they don't compare with beaches that front directly on big water. Maybe the beaches facing the Gulf out on the sound's barrier islands are nice, I don't know.
