Nor realy a warning per say, but if you are going out this morning and hitting the interstate, be very careful, the scanner is going like crazy this morning with cars in ditches. Must be prity slick in spots. I bet in the last 10 min they have called 5 or more officers to diffrent locations.

Also mullan road there was a isusu trooper in the ditch, so it may be a slick road as well.

Dont need anyone hurt, keep your eyes open.

Public information statement...corrected national weather service billings mt 703 am mdt mon oct 12 2009 ...summary of record setting cold across southern montana and north central wyoming... Here is a summary of the records that have been broken during the recent early season arctic outbreak across the region.

Record low temperatures set at billings mt
2009 record old record year
october 9th 18 (tied) 18 1993
october 10th 16 21 1987
october 11th 14 22 1959
october 12th 13 22 1969

the record low for the 12th could still fall further today. The record low for the 13th of october could be approached as the cold snap continues. Setting record low temperatures on four consecutive days is remarkable. The record low temperatures of october 10th...11th...and 12th all mark occasions where the earliest in the fall such a low temperature has been reached. Before october 2009...the previous earliest date that low a temperature of 16...14 or 13 degrees or colder had been recorded was on 28th of october 1971 with a low of 3 degrees and 28th of october 1991 with a reading of 11. It is very unusual to establish a record like this on three consecutive days.

Record low maximum temperatures set at billings mt
2009 record old record year
october 10th 24 33 2008
october 11th 23 28 1969

the forecast indicates the daily record low maximum for october 12th could be approached today in billings. The record for the 12th is 27 and the forecasted high today is 29. The average daily temperature in billings through october 11th is 36.1 degrees. This is the coldest start to october ever in billings...by an exceptional amount. The previous cold start to the month was an average daily temperature through october 11th of 42.4 degrees in 1985. 2009 has eclipsed this by averaging 6.3 degrees less per day so far!

wednesday...

The winter weather advisory that was to begin at noon today is
now in effect as of 9 am. The advisory will continue until 6 am mdt
wednesday.

Snow will begin falling over great falls and nearby mountains
this morning. Snowfall amounts of 2 to 5 inches are possible over the
plains with 8 to 12 inches in the mountains. In addition to the
snow...gusty north winds will create areas of blowing and drifting
snow.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A winter weather advisory for snow means that periods of snow
will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow
covered roads and limited visibilities...and use caution while
driving.

For specific road and travel conditions in montana...dial 5 1 1.
