I was driving to work this morning, flipping through the radio stations, and came across this local 'classics' station that rebroadcasts old American Top 40 countdowns with Casey Kasem - and this was playing.
I was speechless, listening. When I googled it, I discovered that it peaked at #8 on the U.S. charts. I doubt there are very many top 10 70s songs I haven't heard, but I'd never heard this before (and I'm pretty sure I'd remember if I had).
You know, the 70s are often derided as a terrible era of cheesy music, but while I wouldn't say it was the "best" decade for popular music in an objective sense, I think an argument can be made that it was the most experimental and far-ranging.
I mean, when you think of it, you had funk really come into its own, glam rock was happening, space rock and "motorik" or "kosmiche musik" (largely from Germany), new wave, punk rock, and the radio hits included everything from folk-rock to disco.
Even a lot of the really popular stuff from the 70s holds up well, commercial as it might be...Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, ELO, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers...
