Their sound and style took a turn more towards Top 40 modern Pop after the 70's, 80's and 90's stuff was completed. It is still them but it is clearly not the testosterone driven Rock of yesteryear! I like this style much better fellas!
As 2rugged menitoned, Aerosmith did several out of character. One is when they did that stupid wrap song with that hammer head idiot whatever his stupid name is.
Back during the better music days, quite a few rock bands gave disco a chance. Rolling Stones come to mind as they made a disco song or 2.
One success story was Debbie Harry of Blondie who achieved great success when she crossed over to disco and had a couple big disco hits.
Paul McCartney's attempt at a Christmas song is the only Yuletide song that brings me to rage. I forget what it's called but it's horrible.
Mike Ness from Social Distortion also put out a C&W that came up a litttle small. Tough to listen to the voice that brought us Mommy's Little Monster attempt a folksy Country "Alone and Foresaken".

Actually it was a remake of their own song "Walk this Way" with pioneer rappers RunDMC.
I like it way better than the original version myself.
I can't think of any "out of character" songs but that's probably because I either blocked them out of my brain when I first heard them, or I've come to view the songs as just a minor facet of a particular artist or band's musical prism.
I prefer to hear things that are different than what your are expecting, I like to see that artists are growing. It's the static folks that don't evolve that perturb me.
As a musician I prefer not to be pigeonholed into a particular "scene" or "genre" and I prefer not to do that to other artists/musicians either.
It's the poisoning of the art of music itself by the dumb arse A&R suits that like to force the labels onto everyone, I refuse to by their clueless ideas." The suits" are retarded.
