Naples is what it is, and with a little research, anyone can educate themselves about what it is. Naples is the home to many wealthy people who like what it is now and contribute a lot of money to the local economy. Naples is not for everyone and, after doing your research, you find you can't afford to live here or it's not entertaining enough for you, continue your research and move on. Naples shouldn't lower its standards just to accommodate all who would like to live here. If it did, the money would leave. Naples, as it is, is what is attracting those in the higher income brackets and is why we have "nice things" that many others envy and want to enjoy also. I would like to be able to have a 6-bedroom penthouse on Park Avenue in Manhattan, but I can't, so I find an area I can have a 6-bedroom home that offers what I'm looking for.

I am curious, how does a city "lower its standards"?

I see Naples as mostly a retirement community. Although from my experience in looking at a lot of the new construction communities, it seems like more and more families are moving here.

DH and I have worked hard our whole lives and have planned for our retirement. We are fortunate that we can afford a home in Naples. Certainly not a huge house on the gulf, but we don't need that. We know that we can get more house for our money in other areas of Florida, but we have decided it's worth it for us to live in Naples. Naples fits what we want our retirement lifestyle to be!

My community, which is new construction is 60% full year, 40% snowbird, and of the 60% probably 20-30% are families. Not too bad a ratio, but if you look at Riverstone it's probably reversed with 60% families (just a guess but there seem to be a lot more kids there).

Naples is starting to transform itself slowly from a sleepy town in the 1970's to a retirement haven in the 90's and 00's to a bit more of a balanced full year economy. As more companies move to Florida from more expensive locales Naples comes up frequently (or certainly the Fort Myers - Naples area of SWFL) as a place to come to.

The benefit for employers in Naples is that it's a desirable location yet people don't have to live in Old Naples to work in Naples.

Naples is the definition of a boring retirement village, albeit beautiful.
It's completely boring for young people. TRUE STORY

Can you provide more specifics? What defines 'exciting' for you and what kind of activity are you looking for that you can't find in Naples?

If you compare Naples nightlife to Miami's I would agree with you 100% that Miami has the action. Same would be if you compared Naples to NYC. There are still plenty of things to do in Naples though in my experience.

I agree that Naples is boring. Most of the people are rich retirees so that is what the entertainment is geared towards. There are no dance clubs that would interest young people. Its an enclave for wealthy people that are looking for a safe place to enjoy their golden years. A lot of entertainment is in the clubhouses in their gated communities. As the joke goes "Sarasota is for old people and their parents live in Naples" 40-50% of the population is over 65 and the median age is 64. What do you expect? If there was a need for activities for young people you would have them but there aren't. The median age in Miami is 39.2, Sarasota 45.2, Tampa 34.5, Fort Myers 37.6, Jacksonville 35.4. There is nothing wrong with Naples its just a boring place which suits a lot of people. From Wikipedia "Naples is one of the wealthiest cities in the United States, with the sixth highest per capita income in America, and the second highest proportion of millionaires". Don't forget "Naples is the Golf Capital of the World, claiming to have more holes per capita than any other community". No billboards, no commercial airport. my wife and I stayed in a hotel right near the runway (Naples Bay Resort) and I was concerned about the constant noise of planes flying overhead. I think we heard 3 in 3 days and they were private jets. This is paradise for a lot of people but comparing it to any large city in terms of nightlife just doesn't compute.

after having to *LIVE* is SE florida...I'm more than happy having Naples be boring. I can always drive over for the few times a year that I want to stay out late. Rest of the year, I'd rather not live with the noise of an airport, the emissions from all the cars on the interstates, and the general ill minded and acting people that are involved with the "entertainment" industry (clubs, bars, casinos...etc).
