The fact that she was raised in captivity around humans explains everything.

Can they get her to play for water circuses? Only kidding.

I think mammals are smarter than we give credit for and learn by observation.

Did you read the article? They are having trouble capturing the otter.

She was living her life in peace until humans came into her home!

She could easily severely hurt someone if she bites and if she's angry could probably take a person's arm off while in the water. I'm not sure why she can't be relocated to remote coastal Alaska with other sea otters where she isn't going to be a threat to humans and live her life in peace.

River otters can be pretty mean too. Here in Anchorage we've had several dogs and even a couple of kids attacked by a rogue pack of river otters.

Update: 841 evaded capture and has now given birth:

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, she was behaving aggressively because she was pregnant.

I saw that. She's now back to behaving like a normal sea otter with a baby. Good for her!

I know, I’m very happy that they [the authorities] have said that they have no plans to try to capture her or her pup and are urging people to leave them alone.

It just goes to show that, rather than panicking and making assumptions, everyone just needs to calm the **** down in such situations and give the animals the space to do what they need to do.

Yup, thank goodness this ended well for everyone.

Well, at least the authorities et al. will know next time why she is behaving that way. Initially, they had said that she was behaving that way because her mother had been “too friendly with humans.” Not sure how they equated aggressive behavior with being too friendly towards humans.

Regardless, no one has yet to explain why 841’s pregnancy caused her to ride the surfboards once she had stolen them.
