As a Florida, we can always tell the snowbirds when they say "FLair-i-da" instead of "Floor-i'da".

To each is own.
Flawridah sounds best

I figure that if the people who named the region pronounced it properly, then so can we. Nevada is a Spanish word which is an adjective for covered in snow, as in Sierra Nevada (snow-covered mountains) and the middle "a" is properly pronounced with more of a "ah" sound. Unfortunately, people around here - especially my own family - disagree. At least the white ones lol.

But I grew up where "Lafayette" is pronounced "La-FAY-ut" and Finger, TN is correctly (apparently) pronounced "FANG-er." So who I am to judge?

But very few people outside of the Hispanic population pronounce it that way.
Los Angeles and El Paso are also generally pronounced the American way so no surprise. But I wonder how the Sierra Nevada range is pronounced.

Out here in the West, if people are speaking English, the "Nevada" in Sierra Nevada is pronounced exactly the same way we pronounce the state: NEV ADD UH. Just by the way, Nevada County and Nevada City in California are pronounced NEV ADD UH too.

Which way do you prefer?
It's NevAAda. NOT NevAHda. Yes that puts my teeth on edge.

Well, your head might really explode when I tell you that Nevada, Missouri is locally pronounced Ne-VAY-da how or why that pronunciation is justified is beyond me. Though I supposed even a thoroughly mispronounced Nevada is better than Hog Eye, which was the original name of the town before they changed it (actually named after Nevada City, CA).

Town I'm from Yerington, the original name was Pizen Switch. The area of East Mason Valley our spread is on is called Poverty Flats. Newcomers don't like that name and tried to get it changed. One doofus even put up a fancy sign declaring it to be "Starlight Mesa." Ain't no mesa anywhere near Poverty Flats.

It's fascinating how so many people who can't string together two consecutive properly spelled, accurately punctuated, and grammatically correct sentences are getting all bent out of shape over a pronunciation issue.

They may not be able to spell, but they can hear.
