In a little over a week, I will officially be a New Jerseyan.

Anyway, I was wondering if you all could offer me any advice. More specifically, I am trying to not stick out like a sore thumb upon arrival.

Are there any specific things one might do that would get you a look? And vice versa.

Every region has its own norms and such, so I am just curious if there is anything that comes to mind (in terms of "out of towners" you come in contact and things of that nature).

If you drive, learn how to navigate a traffic circle and jug handle. When you order a breakfast sandwich it's Taylor Ham - egg and cheese, don't ask for pork roll. When you pull up to the gas pump just tell the friendly man how much, regular or high test and cash or credit. Do not attempt to pump gas yourself. When someone attempts to cut in line in front of you, tell them very clearly "YOU CAN CUT IN LINE ANYWHERE YOU WANT, AS LONG AS IT'S BEHIND ME" then give them the Jersey stare. When you become a Jersey resident you don't need to tell us about taxes and corrupt politicians, we know it already. If your moving from New York, don't remind us about the crappy pizza and bagels here. The rest is pretty easy to figure out as you go along. Good luck to you.

I have no idea what a "taylor ham" or a pork roll is, so we're good there. lol

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the 'you can't pump your own gas' thing. So weird to me, but eh. Have to get used to it.

LOL, I live in Illinois. Taxes? Corrupt politicians? Every Governor we (aka Chicago) elect goes to prison.

I'm good with the no cutting in line thing. I just need to learn the Jersey stare now...

All Jerseyites know the stare. It's the stare that they are not kidding when they say something. Some other things I forgot. When your in a parking lot and you and another driver try to get into the same spot at the same time and the other driver let's you get the space but says "I HOPE YOU HAVE FOUR SPARE TIRES IN YOUR TRUNK" should be your cue to go find another spot.

Haha noted.

By the way, why exactly can't you pump your own gas in Jersey? I had never even heard of that until a couple months ago. I haven't figured out the reasoning. Drive offs or something?

That's a law here, so I can do that. We joke about how Tennessee drivers are 'left lane drivers.' I'm pretty sure they don't know what a right lane is. I still love them.

Get ready to hit the pedal everytime you pass by the Meadowlands and the factories around Newark/airport. NJ maybe very small but has a lot of different things in the tiny space. You will think driving 30 minutes someplace is very long. It is. You'll either fall under Philadelphia influence or New York influence.

Why is that?

And yes, that is definitely going to be an adjustment. Here, you have to drive 20 minutes just to get to a town to shop/eat/etc.

What about New Jersey influence? I'm a huge New York sports fan, so 'Philly' and 'influence' will never be in the same sentence when it comes to me. lol
