I moned to S.Jersey from San Francisco, I'd say Dayton would not welcome alternative lifestyles. Located right next door, I do a lot of shopping there and I get the feeling that people are uptight(fyi)

Union, NJ (Not Union City)... It's racially diverse, great commute to NYC, pretty affordable, short distance to the shore, though I don't know how it is with its gay community but I'm pretty sure you'd be fine in that area because Union County is pretty diverse and acceptable to all sorts of people.

Hope this helps and Good luck

If commute time is a priority, research it carefully ! There's a real tendency to underestimate commute times. Everyone wants to be an advocate for their favorite town, but not all of the advocates commute (or they're not upfront about how long it takes).

I know people who commute to lower Manhattan from Montclair, and Short Hills (look them up), and those commutes are 75 minutes door-to-desk. These are towns where the njtransit "leg" of the trip is under 40 minutes; cumulative train time is about 50 minutes.

Best of luck!
