Always thought 9 was worse. I agree it is not too bad in Sayreville and Old Bridge specifically, but I still hate where it "exits itself" in South Amboy to merge with 35 and that is always backed up. Further south in Monmouth County, it is a parking lot 24/7, not to mention *****hole drivers galore. And it is more than a coincidence that that third lane immediately disappears like you said right at the border of that sorry-***** county!
Rt 1 however is certainly no picnic either. There is more room in most places and it is actually quite nice to drive through the spot between 287 and Woodbridge Mall - and they were working on that spot for a very long time! But, South Brunswick? Like an hourglass figure. Dates back to 1980 when they first had plans to widen it up from the split from 9 in Woodbridge all the way down to the PA state line. Edison, New Brunswick, North Brunswick, Plainsboro, West Windsor and Lawrenceville were all for it so it would help get business - tax ratables - into their towns. South Brunswick was against it because there were too many active farms along their stretch of 1 so they skipped that 6 mile stretch. Now here it is all these years later the area is getting built out, they finally gave in, but the state has no money to fix it now.
And Rt 130 used to be my favorite road for joy-riding and had such a "vintage" look to it. But that road is getting built out now too.
No, the GSP is the deadliest. Rt.22/23 is only #18 on the list because the traffic is often too congested to cause a fatal collision. I see way too many accidents on GSP every week. It's usually the similar situation that someone didn't see another while changing lanes or running into someone's rear or losing control on some of the curvy sections.
