Rashid Ali Bynum, 28, of Portsmouth, Va. was arrested earlier today and taken into custody outside a home in Chesapeake City, Va. without incident, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone.

He was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun, and second-degree possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose, and was awaiting extradition to New Jersey.

Ciccone, who didn’t take any questions at a brief afternoon news conference, said Bynum had been a member of Dwumfour’s church and was in her phone contacts. The councilwoman had been a leader in the Champions Royal Assembly in Newark, an off-shoot of a megachurch based in Nigeria.

Well, at the ripe old age of 28, he already has a long rap sheet, including multiple weapons offenses and drug possession, plus larceny. Perhaps the deceased loaned him money and he was trying to... void their contract. Or, perhaps he was trying to expand his criminal repertoire.

At last, things seem to be moving-along with the adjudication of this case, and a bit more of the relationship between the accused and the victim has been revealed. At this point--despite the fevered speculation of some forum members--there is zero evidence that this was a politically-motivated murder.
