agreed. preference is given to students whose parents are graduates. it's true of all the ivys as well as tier-one schools including MIT and stanford. my bff is a prof and department head at yale and this is no secret. it also helps to have close relations who are alum, as they are frequently called upon to vouch for the student.

Unless you donated a library or are some sort of A list celebrity with back door pull, no matter what getting into HYP is a crapshoot. They reject plenty of kids ranked no. 1 or with perfect SATs. Assuming your kid can graduate in the top 1% where he goes to school now, I’d stay there and recommend worrying about the other stuff that gets one into those schools.
