Internationalman - Not sure where you are but, if you can afford it you should see what it's all about. And if you get hooked up, and they're going to fly you out for everything, you would be saving money in the long run.
I live in N.E. Georgia and would love to go but, I can't afford the $246.00 in gas and whatever the hotel cost would be. Would love to find out if there is a website that tells about when and where these job fairs are going to be. If anyone knows, post something about the site.
I would have been coming from the left coast and really didn't want to spring for the lodging and airfare. Figure I will hit them up when I get to ND.
I will be the one who is easy to spot at 6'7" and 365 red, black and white horizontal striped shirt.
You should have been in Williston for the Williston Basin Energy Festival tug of war contest a few months ago. You'll all get a kick out of this..........Baker Hughes won it. Seriously.
Allllllllrighty then.... went to the Baker Hughes job fair... 1 1/2 hr to get there.... 1 hour to fill in the app and watch their powerpoint about what we are getting ourselves into and how they need 500 people "right away".... 1 hr wait for initial interview....
3 minutes with the recruiter.... saw my 20 years of IT experience and past 1 1/2 years in construction and told me.... you don't have enough hands on experience.... told him the last 1 1/2 years been doing concrete pouring and finishing; hanging and finishing drywall... and ROOFING... said, "well, I'm sure one of our hiring managers will take a look at it and if he wants you he'll call you"...
WTF...!
Also told him I went to BH in Williston and Dickinson last week in person and they turned me away saying that I needed to apply online.... He said, "No way, I don't believe that."....Clueless
Of the first group of 30 they interviewed only saw 2 Mexican guys get hired...?????
Hmmm...maybe in just a matter of 2-3 weeks there has been a sea change in the view of entry level workers, as one poster noted when the national press finally covers the issue things are pretty much saturated.
Lisan23's excellent post on getting work may be more applicable now than ever. Perhaps we should leave the job fairs and online stuff to those with some real experience.
That's terrible. No job fair around here has ever been operated like that. Good luck finding 500 experience people willing to change jobs right now. If they are experienced they are already working and wouldn't go to a job fair.
