Snow usually starts sticking to the ground by November. Then stays till end of March. Although this year up by the border, it’s just now melting. Every year is a bit different.

When I was growing up in North Dakota in the 1960s, it started sticking on the ground in October and stayed until April. Maybe after the first snow we would get a bit of an Indian Summer and the snow might melt. But after the second round we wouldn't see the bare ground again until mid to late April. I never went trick-or-treating when there wasn't at least a foot of snow on the ground.

I can't say it was fun times. The only times I could really enjoy school recess was in September and May. The other seven months I dreaded going outside. It was just cold and miserable. And I think it had to be below zero for us to get to stay inside during recess.
