We used to live south of Rt. 30 in aberdeen and it took quite awhile to get to the train station. Another way to search is use the 46383 zip code. That's the north side of town. The older homes tend to be near the downtown area, but don't discount them because you may find a rehabbed one that's in good shape. Just keep your options open.

Actually, Campbell (which runs north/south) is the dividing line for 83 or 85.

You have a 46385 zip if you're west of Campbell and 46383 if you're east.

I know ... there's just more housing available east of Campbell - particularly on the north side.

If you searched Ransom Road, which is on the north side, you'd get 46385 properties because it's west of Campbell. But Blue Jay Drive, which is south of 30 but east of Campbell, is 46383.

And then there's South Haven - which has a Valpo address but Portage schools and is way north (up by Rt. 6) which also has 46385 zip.

Let's talk PO Boxes - our Valpo one is 46384.

And this concludes Chuckitys zip code class for June 2, 2008.

I used to stump my first year legal research students with this question .. ha!!! Not so smart are they? It stands for Zoning Improvement Plan ... it's one of those Jello and Kleenex questions.

Okay, so all the zip code talk stumped me (but I did learn what ZIP stands for!)... So which zip codes should I be searching in to get the north side of town? And what's the verdict on Hobart... Worth looking into? Closer to the train?

Both 46385 & 46383 will get you the north side - there really is no good way on the public side of the mls to search a specific side of Valpo. The best thing to do is to look on the map feature when you pull up listings and check out where it is. You'll probably want to stick closer to 49 too for ease of travel to the train.

Before you look into Hobart, I'd look into Chesterton because the train station is right there.
