A little off topic, but I watched the new series, Life After People and the episode they did about Chicago used Gary as a place where "there aren't people" and what happens to teh buildings after decades of no maintenance or use.

There are a couple of safer areas in Gary. One that comes to mind is the Milller Beach area. It's been a few years since I've been to Gary (I used to own a rental there) so I don't remember the name of the other area.

However, the prices in Miller Beach reflect that it is safer. For what you would pay to buy or rent in that area, you're better off just going to a surrounding city or town and not having to worry about friends and co-workers making excuses for not coming over to your house because you live in Gary.

Oh, you will also pay more in insurance (car, home, rental) if your living in Gary. I paid as much for my 2 bedroom rental property @ 800 sq ft built in 1941 (just fire and dwelling) then I did for my personal home in Portage @ 2,200 sq ft with in-ground pool, fireplace, attached garage, built in 1970 (with both full homeowners and car insurance). But on the bright side I was only paying $400 a year for property taxes on the Gary house.

The Miller Beach area is very safe, but it is very expensive. It is mostly a vacation area for Chicagoans.

I'm going to have to think about this one. Is Chicago's south side generally safer than Gary or no?

"Generally" it's six of one and half-dozen of the other. Both have pockets of safe areas (rather small pockets in Gary's case), but both generally suck. I don't know why anyone would move to Gary except maybe Miller Beach without some very compelling reason.

Yes, it is. There are several neighborhoods on the South side that are pretty safe. I don't agree that the South side "generally sucks" and is pretty much the same as Gary. It'd be much much easier to find a good place live on the South side than in Gary.
