Hello everyone, I'm new here and wanted to say a quick and friendly hello. I'm originally from the finger lakes Region of New York sate, just above the NY/PA border, and am considering moving to Oklahoma in the near future, after discovering how low the cost of living is there. In my current area, rent is very high. A one bedroom apartment ranges from $500-650 and up, and your lucky if it includes any utilities. Plus, there has been very little to no economic development here for several years. And, good jobs are scarce. I'm almost 30 years old and still washing dishes at Apple bee's, because I can't find anything better right now (yes, I know go ahead and laugh)...I am barely getting by, after paying my rent, plus all utilities...gas, water/sewer, garbage, electric, cable, phone, internet, etc...I don't have hardly anything left to spend on my hobbies, or enough for a night out with friends...I am lucky if I can even go to the movies or a restaurant once a month....Anyway...I found this apartment in Endin that would be perfect. I can defiantly afford to live comfortably here, and still have money to enjoy the things I love to do, here's the
link...https://enid.craigslist.org/apa/d/pe...153212517.html

Problem is, I don't know much about the area, and was wondering if it's within walking distance to the downtown, as I don't have a working vehicle at the moment and would need everything to be close by...if it's not, then please recommend me a town that is.

What are your opinions on living in OK? Are the people friendly? What's the price of food? (a gallon of milk here is over 3 bucks) I'm looking forward to your input. Thanks a bunch!

You're starting out on the right foot. Enid is one of the best small towns in Oklahoma. Since it's not all that small, it offers more than most other Oklahoma small towns. The apartment seems about a mile from downtown, so maybe not too far. Milk is around $2 a gallon. People are friendly. Sorry, I don't know much about the jobs in the area.

You'd have to get used to the scenery there. The horizons are ruler flat with very few trees. You can go most anywhere and see all around for many miles. It's amazing. It doesn't look much like the part of Oklahoma where I live, set in a small, somewhat wooded valley. Still, you should go for it. Good luck with Enid, if that is the choice.

Unless you have marketable job skills a move to OK will not change anything. Wages are lower, jobs in small towns are fewer, you have no social network. Life without transportation will be a challenge.

Pull up some good maps of the area you are interest in moving to. Pull up local services such as public transportation and hours of operation, job postings, wage reviews, grocery adds. Single, from out of town in Enid - how do you plan on handling emergencies such as medical issues?

I have an Associates Degree in Information Technology, as well as A+ Certification. I am unable to get a job in my field here, because no one is hiring right now. However, I build and repair computers on the side to make a little extra money from time to time. Minimum wage here is around $9.50/hr, or a little lower depending on where you are. I am not sure what it is in Oklahoma, or if they have a need for people in the IT field, defiantly something to look into though.

Only the biggest small towns in Oklahoma are probably worth considering. Other than Enid, Stillwater may be worth considering. It may have more IT jobs.

In Stillwater, if you work at OSU or a student, you're entitled to free bus service. Everybody else, unless qualified for a discount pays .75.

Min. wage is $7.25, but I bet only few people get paid that little.

If you work at a popular restaurant in Stillwater, such as the Hideaway, you can probably make enough in tip income to get by well, while finding a better paying job.

With no relevant experience you are competing with every CC graduate with family in the county.

Durant may have IT job opportunities with the Choctaw Nation with their headquarters and/or casino resort.

Unless you've made your mind up to go to Oklahoma, check out the Knoxville, Tn area. Low unemployment. Low COL. Great location (close to Smokey Mnts).
I have lived in Ok, Ar, Fl, Va and now Tn so I do have some experience in the different areas.

What's the tornado activity like in Stillwater? I don't mind bad weather, but would be a bit worried about my home getting destroyed and losing everything.

Oklahoma has tornadoes, earthquakes and occasionally real bad weather such as black ice and flash floods. There is always insurance.
