Another vote for Ashland. Cute, walkable downtown, great shops and restaurants. I recommend the Brick Room. Excellent food! Then a walk through Lithia Park. Have fun!

Years ago we thought the chicken fried steak was very tasty, at "Heaven On Earth" off I-5, exit 86, close to Glendale. Then a few years later some said the chicken fried steak was lousy......Different folks food tastes...different chef's/cooks ...beats me. They have been in business for 47 years.
