Eugene, Corvallis and McMinnville would be good places to consider.
As to Bend, it is increasingly crowded, expensive and these days has two primary seaons - smoke season and snow season.
Best thing to do is take a trip, drive some neighborhoods, wander some downtowns..best way to get the feel for a place.
Not all towns are either retirement towns or college towns.

Hood River is a good example. As is Astoria. Both are pretty and reasonably tolerant places with vibrant urban areas. Neither has a college nearby and neither is mainly a retirement Mecca. Both are blue politically but not so much as Eugene or Portland.

It's because their priorities aren't about making anything better, or at least not better in the sense that you might mean. It's all about identity and tribalism with them. If you haven't read Tightrope, you probably should.

Looks like Newberg tops Oregon's list of racist and ignorant communities yet again. It's been on quite a roll recently.

An employee at a school in Newberg went to work in blackface last week and has been placed on administrative leave, according to a message from the district.
As far as little Florence's rally on Saturday, it mirrored its counterpart in DC pretty accurately; sparsely attended by the outer fringe of the fringe. It was disappointing to see a few children as young as two years old there, though, soaked to the bone and looking like they were about ready to cry when I drove past on my way to pick up some pumpkin Kahlua. Some parents.

Both HR and Astoria have colleges (community), not college centric communities, but the colleges are very essential to the community and life / economy there.

I've taught and had significant students at each, who went on to serve and change their communities for the betterment of all residents.

So... Keep your eyes open, there just may be a college in your chosen place. (Hope so! The staff and students might enrich your new community.)

Well yes. Pretty much every county seat in OR has some sort of community college. But no one would ever call Astoria or Hood River a college town like Corvallis or Pullman. All Hood River has is a one-building extension campus of the Columbia Gorge Community College which is actually located in The Dallas. And it is tiny with less than 200 full time students. Astoria has Clatsop Community College which has about 800 students total.

I have never seen any place in Oregon that is hostile to any race. Most certainly there are people in every local who be ignorant and brutish. And most certainly it has happened in every town. I've just never seen it. And if I had, I would have definitely stepped in and am certain others would as well. You are far more likely to see a female harassed.

I guess it really how you define "racism" too.

I loved living in Eugene/Springfield and Roseburg. Eugene is more expensive, but it's the livelier and more progressive of the two. You probably already know the farther you go down the I-5, the sunnier it gets.

And...if anyone ever hassles you over race, come back here and let us know. We'll form a posse.

IMO, conservatives are far less racist than those claiming not to be racist. I know that doesn't answer the OPs question, but expect this type of response when you specifically ask for "...without ignorant/racist population". It sorta makes you look like the racist.

RIGHT ON!!

Same thing can be said of people who claim to have an "Open Mind." In my experience, it usually means the exact opposite.

To OP - Stay out of Multnomah County and other parts of Portland metro area, it seems the majority of the population constitute the main racist group in OR. They like to lump people in groups and disregard the value of the individual.

It makes it easier to sow dissention and maintain/increase power.

Racism is everywhere. Always was, always will be.

Far Left socialist paradise NYC is probably one of the most racist places in the United States.

The ”tolerant, open minded, everybody's racist but me” crowd are some of the worst.

Find something else to worry about and get a life.

This story has NOTHING to do with Bend nor for that matter "racism."

Aside from some DA trying to get his 15 minutes of fame, by postulating a theory as to example of some "dark history" for which he will likely never prove; this is a story about a murder in a bar and nothing more.
