Earlier post mentioned that high crime is a code word for many African Americans living in an area.

But the person who said that border of Florida with Georgia has high crime is married to African American lady.

So I don't think that he meant high crime = many African Americans living in that area.

I hope I clarified.

Something is puzzling me.

I understand that one must visit a place and surroundings before deciding to move there.

But I get the impression from some of you that Panhandle is an area to avoid (maybe to settle with Pensacola worst case scenario).

I mentioned I'd like to avoid water because of Hurricane risk, but how often does Hurricane happen?

Even NYC had Hurricane few years back.

And driving seems slow paced, which may be suitable.

Is there something else I am just not getting?

Brooklyn to the Florida panhandle is just such a drastic change. There are hardly two places in the US as different from each other as these.

The Panhandle gets hurricane-force winds as regularly as anywhere else in the US. It's an expected part of life that at some point you will experience a hurricane in your area.

It is beautiful around here. But based on your original needs, it might not be your dream.

It isn't crime-ridden (compared to NY) even the areas over on the GA border...though not sure about that either.

But we seriously lack public transportation, the types of apartments you were talking about just don't exist. IMO most apartments around here (Okaloosa county) are really crappy..with a few exceptions. They don't necessarily have anything wrong with them, but might not be filled with the sort of people you get in the standard apt in NY. Lots of young military types, can be kind of rowdy. Also most don't have elevators and if they do they are still open to the outside, vs apts in NY.

As for water...you just can't avoid it here. Do we evacuate every year? No, but could we? Yes.

Yes driving is slow paced, but you will do lots of it..vs walking anywhere.

You also mentioned you like the idea of wide-open spaces thus the rural parts of the area appeal to you. But in this particular area...well let's just say you don't randomly drive down someone's driveway in those parts...some of those types chose it for the privacy and might not take kindly to it. Experienced this a few years back up near Laural Hill...was met with a shot gun and a not so nice dog. After we told them we had to take a detour because a tree had fallen on the main road, he was helpful...but it definitely isn't for the faint of heart. Nor is it the charming rolling hills of NY. It is or can be rather poor and impoverished with the only store being Dollar General.

Again, can't emphasize enough you really, really need to visit.

Thank you for this link.

I guess one has to balance hurricane risk with other things.

People in NYC apartments are very different from military types. Very different. By the way in a previous job I worked with military and they were quite respectful. But I understand when a person is young, they can be kind of rowdy.

Oh my, that driveway story does sound scary. I guess one has to factor that as a possibility of a road being closed and what happens when you must take a detour.

I hope I can visit soon.

BTW the driveway incident was to paint a picture of the type of rural environment that is around here, at least to the north. You could live here for 30 years and never run into something like that. It is or can be isolated with few neighbors or quite a distance between them. Many people want that sort of thing. But as a newcomer to the area, I wouldn't recommend it until you get a feel for the place.

Very important! One must get a feel for the place.
