LBroox, sirric is right, the downtown area is great if you're single. I was just in Pensacola last month to visit my mother, and I was happy to see how downtown has come to life in the past two years.

@ Florida_native: Thanks for the reply. I do love the downtown area but I am not sure I feel comfortable living alone in that area. Too many of my current neighbors and coworkers are scaring me away from living there especially since none of the properties I have talked to will allow me to have my dog. I haven't given up totally though on the downtown area.

Is there some way to map what areas of Pensacola are safer for families? I was born there and visited up until the early 2000's but haven't been back in 10 year or more...I have kids and a wife now and they have never been and hopefully depending on how events play out in the next 6 months or so we can move wherever we want and we have it narrowed down to the P'Cola area and Kentucky. From what I have read Gulf Breeze is safer for a family and has better schools as well.

Just stick to Gulf Breeze and you will be fine. If you can manage to stay in Gulf Breeze Proper (the City Limits), even better. Definitely a good place for kids with good schools and lots of sports/activities.

If your husband is working on base, there are plenty of good subdivisions around the back gate area. Blue Angel Elementary is one of the highest rated elem schools in the county and there is a great kids park on Gulf Beach Highway. Plenty of nice, quiet neighborhoods to live. We live in the back of a neighborhood near the base and have lots of military families surrounding us. In the 14 years we've lived in our house, I've never heard of any crime and people walk the neighborhood safely at all times of the day and night.

Pace schools are considered some of the best in the state of Florida. This is why people in Escambia County are moving to Pace for the schools. There are place a bit to the north of Pace that are some really nice subdivisions (i.e. Ashley Plantation, Stonechase) that are very attractive. Gulf Breeze is nice too but in the event of a hurricane some subdivisions are in the evacuation zone.

I like the Pace area Milton is good too it is 45min drive to the Base on the highway but the crime rate is low and Schools are good. My dad was military and he retired here. I think the Santa Rosa school district is better because they have more funding and teachers are paid more. Any way you can find the bad anywhere but if you look there is Positive things there as well!
