Okay boys and girls, we are now ready to discuss the September Photo Contest theme. A special thanks to Alpha and ShepsMom for continuing to facilitate this.
As I have mentioned in a previous post, I have attempted to come up with something that is both challenging and interesting, but not equipment intensive. I can only hope that with this theme, I have at least come close to doing that.
Are you ready? Bring out the popcorn!
The theme for this month’s contest is…
Textures!
Now I can see the head scratching and brow knitting going on, so I have gathered some materials to explain just that. According to PhotographyTips.com, Texture is the visual and tactile quality of the surface of an object, revealed in a photograph by variances in tone, depth and shape. Lighting has the most influence over how well texture is captured in an image.
Here is a link providing a Glossary of common photography terms and tips on taking great photographs. It is a recommended read. Terms beginning with "T"
“When people observe a soft, furry object or a smooth, shining surface, they have a strong urge to touch it.”
Texture in photographs therefore appeals to the viewer’s tactile sense, the sense of touch. Texture in photographs sometimes comes with Patterns but it does not necessarily have to. This link explains Pattern, Texture, Lighting, Tone and Volume as elements of a photograph. Basic Photography Techniques - Pattern, Volume, Lighting, Texture, Tone.
I hope that this theme encourages many to participate as I think you would only be limited by your imagination. The thread is now open for comments, suggestions, objections and questions.
I love this! It will really get the creative juices flowing. And you're right - everyone can definitely do this.
