It is a $10,000 fine if you get caught picking anything up off the ground in the old town site!!

The world famous WhaleBone Graveyard in Point Hope. It is the only one in the world. I know over 300 of my closest friends are in that place. I get the creeps when I walk in and I recognize all the names of all my friends that died so young from cancer!!

This graveyard had to be expanded three times in less than 20 years due to so many people in Point Hope dying!!

Lots of stuff Abandoned in or near Point Hope !

Ada Boat an old boat that has been abandoned for decades. This boat used to make the trips from Kotzebue to Point Hope to bring supplies. That boat died 80 years or so ago. It is located 23 miles outside of Point Hope on the North Side of the Beach.

The distance from Ada Boat to those mountains in the background is 50 miles. Those mountains are where all the snow comes from in the village.

The never ending North Wind(s) blow all the snow into the village.

I have a crazy preposterous story about what happened to me here in 1983. This is too crazy - it is preposterous. But I do have 7 witness to this very strange event. I fell off my snow machine - way up in those mountains. My machine froze up and took off. - The throttle was frozen.
They always told me - Never ever drive at one speed. Keep mixing it up- keep squeezing that handle for the accelerator.. I forgot that part.

My crazy insane story is here. I don't expect you to ever believe this -UNTIL you ask one of those 7 witness 5 of them are still alive!!

READ IT HERE

There is just no way - an unmanned snow machine could ever make it 80 miles from on top of those mountains right smack dead center to Ada boat 10 feet away.. ALL BY ITSELF !! ... But it did !!!

Abandoned .. this next image displays that word in a very stange and different sort of way. Here is the photograph - then I will explain the history of what you are looking at and the signifigence of all these 'bones'

The last chief of Point Hope - Attangoraq. A true scoundrel in every sense of the word. He is buried right here - this is his grave. Notice in the background - the "whalebone graveyard" That; is one mile exactly from the road where this abandoned grave sits. He was not allowed to be buried in the whalebone graveyard. The only person ever cast out and abandonded by his own people!

This chief had six wives (count the bones) The two tall ones in arches are his biggest whale received. The other six - are for his wives; He wasn't happy with six. He stole another man's wife for #7. He was murdered and placed here with his six wives!!

that should have been the term used then.."kidnapped" not "He stole another man's wife for #7." "stole" means to take...kidnapped is a whole different ballgame and term.

I work in Gary, IN, a once-beautiful and thriving city, most of which is now in ruins. I grew up in Gary when it was still thriving. Now, each day I pass many derelict and abandoned buildings on 4th and 5th Avenues. This once-beautiful apartment building is the epitome of what Gary has become. It's so sad. Can you imagine how stately and beautiful this building was 40+ years ago? (I didn't feel it would be safe to get out of my car in this neighborhood, so I took these photos from inside my car.)
