So...I think that Republican presidential candidates have been getting progressively more ultra-right wing over time.
Compared to most democratic, highly industrialized, wealthy, European nations, the Democrat party is center-right...but they've begun veering a bit to the left of that too. A lot of people voted for Obama because of the change he advertised, that a lot of people didn't believe he came through on. Bernie Sanders seemed like someone who might try his best to act on what Obama had advertised, and so a lot of people loved him...to the point where I think that they refused to vote for Hillary, or even voted for Trump, because they didn't find Hillary left-leaning enough. They see the Democrat party as center-right, and I think many of them don't perceive that much difference between them and Republicans.
Then there's the ultra right wingers and Trump fanatics who often view anything to the left of them as communism.
So, I figure that society is split between these three groups of people who want absolutely nothing the other two groups want, and perceive it as their highest priority to obtain what their group wants.
Bernie's too old...but Alexandria Occasio Cortez is quite young and I'm thinking she'll take Bernie's place.
So...what do we do about this three-way conflict that inevitably pisses almost everyone off?
Nobody say "civil war," or "split up the country." That's never going to happen. The closest thing to "civil war" that'll ever occur is five hicks with shotguns being blasted with tear gas before being swiftly arrested...or other forms of impotent rage.
We can't split up the country...because that would merely quadruple every problem we have now.
IDK, I feel like dems are just too chicken to really go left. Bernie would have been the one.
The right went all out nationalistic and fanatical. I would not even say republicans or conservatives. I'd just say it's a new right wing party called "Trumpism".
Then you have no understanding of the political spectrum.
The Republicans just want people to obey the law be responsible make proper life choices and work. Increasing numbers of people on the left find this intolerable they just want free stuff they want to be impulsive their whole lives and play the victim role. There's so many great progressive policies out there that get muddied by their mass melting pot welfare state type ideals and identity politics and their lax on crime mentality.

Mister -- That nails it!
The Democratic Party may best be described as:The unproductive and the unmotivated, led by the unscrupulous.

I don't think we do have really differing societal goals. Those who want power are using the media to try to divide people who, basically believe about the same thing.
If you do sit down with folks from the other side and have a reasonable conversation, usually you find out you agree on about 80% of it.
Centrist voters who just want to live their lives with as little drama as possible
Voters who have contrarian positions on certain hot button issues that make them NOT fit in any party. (Im for national health insurance (left) WITH copays and deductibles (right) paid for with a payroll tax. Im against "free college" even though it would be a HUGE help for me. (right) For voter ID (Free of charge if it isnt a drivers licence. right)
