It isnt non-sense at all. Greed is ruining the sport.
When was the last time a player asked for their contract to be renegotiated to get paid less because he had a bad year?
Well it wasn't exactly a renegotiation, but a couple years ago Tom Brady asked for less money so the Patriots could sign better players and improve their chances for a championship.
I understand why Revis is doing this, and he has every right to do so. I get annoyed when players hold out in the middle of a contract like this, but as people have mentioned, the team can cut a player at any time if they're injured, aren't performing, etc.
It's funny to watch this happen to the Jets though. They've brought in several players with questionable character and now one of their "rocks" is stirring the pot before the season even begins.
Players have their contracts terminated all the time in the NFL. ALL THE TIME. You have an off year. Gone. That 10 million you were promised over the next two years, gone. This happens all the time. There is no "honor" in any of this. It is widely thought that the players union did a terrible job negotiating the existing CBA.
They still get their guaranteed money. You do know what guaranteed money means, right? Unless it is by misconduct which is clearly defined in the contract, they get paid. So when you hear that so and so have a 60 million dollar contract and 40 million is guaranteed, they get the 40 million even if they get cut or injured.

It doesnt matter. A contract is a contract, a signature is a signature, and a man's word is a man's word. You sign a contract, you honor it.

What about the other 20 million? That is 33% of the contact someone can lose. That is a lot of money you are ignoring.

Contracts are broken all the time in the NFL. A "man's word" means nothing in the real world.
Bottom line: Players hold out all the time. Why? Because they can. That is the labor market they are in. What you think of that is one thing, reality is another thing.

Yes, but that is part of the contract and the player negotiates that and is aware of it. Holding out is not part of the contract. In fact, it is a violation of the contract and the player could likely be sued for it and the team would win.
If a player gets cut, they could walk away with a ton of money for doing absolutely nothing but negotiating a smart contract. Teams play out the ass to players all the time after they cut them or get injured. You act as if teams dont get the short end of the stick as well because they do... a lot.

Contracts are broken all the time but that doesnt make it right.
If I were an owner or coach, a player that holds out would not play. That type of behavior should not be rewarded.
