i understand the winters may be a bit variable but in a usual year..may i ask..how long DO the winters last???? are we talking about 4-6 months of snow and blizzards????
I have lived here almost six years. Some winters have been colder/snowier than others, but overall they aren't too bad. It's pretty sunny here, and there are days that we have mild temps (70 in February isn't normal, but it's happened several times since I've been here). We can get a lot of snow, but it doesn't usually stick around on the ground for months. We do get spring snowstorms, though, but the snow melts quickly.

Sorry we can't give you more certainty. Rapid City is known for its unpredictable weather. I do find winter more tolerable here than in Eastern Nebraska, where I'm originally from. The rest of the year makes up for it, in my opinion.

One thing to keep in mind, it is windy here. Other than that, if you dress properly and can tolerate the cold, weather doesn't have to prohibit outdoor activities very often. The Black Hills are just as beautiful in the winter as they are in the summer and fall, and there's plenty to do.

There are decent options for live music and museums here, as long as you don't expect big city entertainment. I enjoy the symphony, hockey games, concerts, etc. There are quite a few breweries and wineries in the area, if you're into that scene.

We can get blizzards and snowstorms, but in my experience so far, it hasn't been months and months of snowstorms.

I can only speak for myself, but I actually think March and April are the worst months. I don't mind cold weather, so January and February don't usually bother me. I don'tcare much for spring because it's so unpredictable and we usually get spring snowstorms. It melts quickly, but by that time of the year I am ready for warmth and summer activities, so it's tedious to deal with snow. In my time up here, I can't remember many long, drawn out stretches of cold, gray skies and snow. I have seen snow in every month except June, July and August, but the one early September snow I remembered was basically a dusting in Rapid City. The higher you go in the hills, the more snow you'll find. We did have a nasty blizzard at the beginning of October a few years ago, but once it was over I was shoveling in a t-shirt because it was so warm outside.

I haven't been to any of these venues, but you might look up Black Hills Vinyl, The Seed Theater and The Garage. It looks like they all host live music events and all are small downtown venues. Downtown Rapid has really improved from when I moved here. There's now a town square that holds all kind so of events, festivals, movies and concerts in the summer, an ice skating rink in the winter, etc.

Deadwood is also not that far away for casinos, concerts, etc.
