Well, the cousin who said the ostrich stunk was a vegan, so it might just have smelled meaty, which would be off-putting to her. I remember my mother and grandmother frying up some kidneys and you had to open all the windows and run away from home to avoid the stink.
Ostrich is much like a steak, in fact, it's so much like beef.. Often burgers are made from it.. I've never prepared any, but I've eaten Ostrich, Elk, Kangaroo, Emu, Buffalo, Gator and more.
For awhile, we had an Emu farm in the area and a restaurant had their Emu burgers. They were OK - very lean and dry. I'll stick with beef for that.

Most wild game meats are quite lean. I.. Haven't ever tried an Emu Burger, but.. You'd think you'd toss in something to add a little bit of fat to it. I'd think most places that do an ostrich burger.. It's not 100% ostrich. But.. i couldn't tell you for sure.

Maybe off topic but does anyone know of any restaurants in the NYC area serving either alligator or ostrich? NYC had one on the West Side Drive that folded years ago, to which my wife and I went. In Port Chester, there was an ostrich-serving restaurant that I went to with another lawyer in 2000. It's no longer there.

You might post this in the NY forum, where locals could see it.
