You will fit in fine in Covington. Its a friendly place. You will probably get to know most of the people in town, its definately a country type place. Good Luck in your move and welcome to Virginia!

Thanks Roanoker4! We are saddened to leave Texas and family... but it sure helps to know that we're going someplace that has great friendly people awaiting. You sure don't find that just anywhere!

By the way.... I read in another forum that Covington city schools may be better than Alleghany schools... anyone have any info on that? I think Alleghany schools are in Low moor... and depending on where you reside around Covington will determine where your children attend. just curious.

I don't know much about the schools up there but I haven't heard of any problems. Its a rather quiet area news wise. VA has a good public school system compared to many other states. Clifton Forge has a great community college called Dabney Lancaster so students can stay in that area after high school or transfer to other colleges in the area.

Default slim market

Obviously those who live in Covington don't want to leave because there are very few homes for sale there. My husband just flew back from a few days there and it was all the realtor could do to get 3 homes to look at. It's looking like we may have to start looking elsewhere....

Default Covington

I'm not surprised it is slim pickins up there. Its not a growth area and the people are pretty set. They probably want to keep it that way!!
Buchanan is a little closer to Roanoke and some new homes have been built there recently. I have a friend there and the big pastime is hunting/fishing. Its country and not "upscale" and much like Covington. Its in Botetourt County. Good Luck on your search!

Default home prices

Can anyone tell me why the Covington area homes are more pricey than Roanoke area or even Lexington? I would think it would be the opposite... but we are finding that money goes further homewise outside of Covington.

Texaschic........ what area are you being shown homes in....... Clearwater park? Dressler Estates? Clearview Estates? Historic Rosedale? Those use to be considered pricey.

Well our realtor has only been able to find us 2 listings that "semi" match our needs.... one in Clifton Forge and one in Covington. The one in Covington was on Overlook Dr. The other one didn't meet our needs at all. There seems to be a shortage of properties out there that meet our criteria I guess. We want something newer and I guess there's not much new construction around that area.

We really wanted to stay in that area.... but I'm seeing new homes around Roanoke/ Lexington for same price/ more amenities. Our realtor is out of Roanoke and she's having a hard time finding properties over there... maybe that's the problem.

I think the folks that live over there really want to stay in the area as well!
That is a pretty sparse area as far as I've seen of it.

I think so too. Makes one wonder... if it's so great that folks don't wanna leave then why aren't there any new housing developments going up?
