Last I looked for taxes, that app wasn't available. So I looked up taxes on the house I used to own. They are more than double what I paid nearly twenty years ago. If my current Raleigh house were up in Rochester, I'd probably be paying four times or more what I'm paying here.
That app seemed to only include the county taxes. I looked up my old house as well. I do know that when I left in 08 the taxes on my house in the city (with the awful schools) was around $2500. I live outside of Raleigh now in a house assessed at 190k for $1488 a year in property taxes with much better schools (keep in mine I was in the city) my kids were all a year behind when we moved down South.

Rochester has some good things going for it. I just have much more house (and education) down here for the money than I would up North. I know my parents are really struggling with the tax bill on their paid off house but that's because they took hits with several layoffs and being out of work the past few years.

That app includes your total tax levy for a piece of property, both county and school taxes. Mine is as follows:

Legal DescriptionTrue_____________Tax Town/County _True Tax School
20TR L68 T1 F DINARDO 123-5 L24 $2,056.79 ________$2,244.64

Combine both of them and my total tax levy is 4300, and then I get the almost-$700 for a STAR rebate. So in my case, I pay 2056 to the County and 2244 to the Greece schools.

The taxes are outrageous and the wages are low. The homes are never updated or repaired because no one has money to fix their homes. All their money goes into taxes and their property depreciates. Nothing can justify these high taxes.

I lived in Fairport for 28 yrs. Yes, the taxes are high but the schools were great, the roads were great, the town services were wonderful. To say that wages are low is a bit of a stretch. Not with the ppl I knew and lived around. We also kept our houses updated. Not sure if you are just talking inner city or what, but you couldn't be more incorrect from what I saw and lived.

I think Fairport is really underrated. It has a beautiful historic downtown with specialty shops and the canal. And the homes are immaculate. There are no run down homes so I'm not sure what Epietra1 is talking about either. Really the only rundown homes that I've ever seen are in the poorer parts of the city. But definitely not in the South/East part of the city nor any of the suburbs.

You're right--property taxes are sky high here!

We have relatives who moved to TN and KY, and they're paying thousands less per year on homes with more square footage. A friend moved to SC in 2013 and is thrilled with her low property taxes, but she's complaining about some other tax they impose there. She also complains about the roads lol.

Here in Tennessee the roads are above average in my opinion. It is primarily due to the fact we do not get the winter weather that is typical (not this year though) of Rochester.

As I've stated before, I lived in Fairport for 28 yrs but now have lived in Rockford (Grand Rapids), MI. (Considered to be a lovely suburb here). Taxes here on my $250k home are $2900. Less than half what I pd in Fpt for $180k home. You do get what you pay for. Here? Private roads, subdivisions, etc all over. This means we get NO SERVICES. We pay HOA ($50/month) for our garbage, snow plowing of the subdivision roads, repaving and road repair, no recycling, no pick up of leaves, downed trees, household items etc. The schools here don't seem to be as good as in Roc area. Schools here are odd. You can go to any school district you'd like. There is very little to no zoning laws here. Trailers can be put on any land you own. My friend is trying to sell her $250k home but having a tough time as there is a broken down, trashy trailer across the street complete w free range chickens....
Town government is appointed, not elected. Somehow a volunteer firefighter is always rewarded w the job. Great guy! But qualified? Hmmmm. I DEARLY miss Perinton rec! There is NOTHING here like that. No rec dept to speak of. I will gladly pay taxes when you see services. Will be moving back in a few yrs when my new MI born husband retires. Can't happen soon Enough!
