Having been born and raised there, and having since lived and worked in a variety of America's major cities, I still have a fondness for San Antonio that makes visits to my family all the more tolerable. I offer the following observations as someone who knows the city well, along with many other major American cities:

What I Like:

-A small city feel with many big city trappings
-Uniqueness
-A rare American city with an actual historical signifigance and sense of history
-Old, traditional Hispanic culture
-Warm weather and surprisingly green - quite beautiful
-Absurdly cheap cost of living - a 4000 sq. ft. house costs less than a 800 sq. ft. condo where I live
-Great food!

What I do not like:

-Bad city government - a coalition of community college Socialists and unrepentant Rednecks
-Virtually no significant educational infastructure - the smart and creative in San Antonio seem to all leave San Antonio
-Lack of development - a very poor town when compared to others
-Lack of good nightlife or social scene - if you were younger and had to opportunity to live elsewhere, San Antonio would seem like a social wasteland

San Antonio is a great place to live - and probably not as great a place to relocate as a young professional. Again, it all depends on what you like. If you are looking to raise a family, enjoy a nice pace of life, and surround yourself with a unique and friendly culture, I could not reccomend a better place. If you are looking for up-scale, big city life, you will be sadly dissapointed.
I agree whole heartedly and couldn't have said it better myself. Although I've never lived outside SA, I plan to and then who knows, I'll probably then learn to appreciate it if I realize the grass is always greener. However, having spent a good amount of time in SoCal and NYC, I realize it's lacking a lot (for me at least.)

I agree with Lookingtoleave. SA is lacking a lot for me but I do realize that it is not that bad and could be a lot worse. We moved here from NYC and I'm finding it hard to adjust but...the weather is great, the people are friendly, and the food is delicious! Our monthly rent is over $1,900 cheaper and MUCH bigger and nicer.

For me, there is not a whole lot to do down here and there are no real defined neighborhoods to stroll. The driving is awful and the job market really stinks but again..it could be much worse.

Lol, I'm looking to go in the opposite direction. Truthfully, I'm a big city girl and while SA is a big city, it's one with a small town feel-which to many is its charm, but not mine. My son's godfather moved from NYC when he was young and he couldn't take it anymore and just moved back. I already found a neighborhood in Brooklyn I like a lot and can afford. There's nothing like a stroll in Soho or Central Park west so you can walk to the museums. Ugh-I miss NY already. I just have to take my little one into consideration.

I probably will too after awhile. If I hate it, I can always come back-SA ain't going anywhere. I've just lived in TX all my life and really need to try something new. I'll hate myself if I live and die in TX and never know what it's like to live elsewhere.

Holy Lord!!! That's abnormally high though from what I have seen. I know quite a few people there and the most I've ever heard of is around $400 because gas is separate. Some landlords do pay for gas though.

You are right. I heard that it was supposed to be higher down here too, but I have yet to experience that. It's much easier on the bill when you're in central air/heat, but a lot of nyc isn't.
