Hey,

I have been scouring this forum because I am very interested in planning trips to several different areas of CA. I am entertaining the possibility of moving to CA. I would like to visit some of the cities to get a feel for them.

Poking around on Zillow, Twentynine Palms seems pretty affordable to buy property, and it has somewhat of a population.

Is it a military base? Are people buying property on a military base (what would be the point of that)? Why is the property cheap there (crime, aircraft noise or explosions)?

If any one of you actually live there, it would be awesome if you could shed some light. Thanks!

I don't live there, but it's HOT in the summer. It has the world's largest Marine Corps training base. Joshua Tree National Park is supposed to be nice.

So is it only military personnel that can buy property there?

No; check this older thread on 29 Palms; more developments must have been built since then.

I just read through it. Thanks. There isn't much info that I was looking for there.

29 Palms info from City-Data

The building permit trend and the unemployment rate are troubling.

Do a search on Realtor.com Twenty Nine Palms Ca. I noticed quite a bit of small homes for $100,000 or less, They are small homes, one in fact is $110,000. it is 664 sq. ft on a 5 acre lot. Another one is $88,000 for a 430 square foot home on 5 acres. Real small homes isn't my thing but there are younger people that really like it. As of right now Realtor.com lists 715 items.

The property is cheap(er) there because it's remote. It's not Amboy, but it's still way out there, if you're into being in the desert but still a relatively short drive away from shopping in Yucca Valley.

I've read about this. Apparently it's next to impossible to do anything related to building permits. I wonder why.

This is kinda right up my alley, LOL. I was born and raised in the city, so I am used to smaller spaces. I'd be happy with 900-1000 square feet.

I'd like to be within a 30 minute drive to amenities. I like the idea of living a bit rural, but not SUPER far out.
