Eldorado has a good mix of all ages, genders, married/single, gay/straight. About the only commonalities seem to be that they are mostly white, highly educated and have higher than average household incomes.
debbie - Renting might not be a bad idea before you decide where you want to live. For many people who prefer to live with views and dark skies, a 20-minute drive to the action seems like a worthwhile trade-off. Others prefer being close to the action and travel to the great outdoors. There's no right or wrong. Personally, we've got a house in the country and a little condo in the city - the best of both worlds!
PDJ - As for the utility costs in Eldorado, most homeowners pay an average of $50-60/mo for water. It is really hard to gauge what propane would cost because it is so subjective. If I had to give an estimate, I'd say an average home of, say 2,000 sq.ft. would probably use around 900 gallons of propane a year. At $1.50/gal figure $1350/year (this past heating season our propane cost $1.25/gal). We put a solar thermal hot water system in and saved about 25% on our propane usage. As sbsoso said, the Eldo water is fine to drink. Many feel it's too hard, so they have water softener systems installed.
Wow that propane heat is expensive. Good to know. That $1350/yr is substantially more than natural gas for heat/dhw/and cooking in the Chicago area.

A large part of the difference is that propane has to be delivered by truck to the customer, as opposed to a pipeline that goes directly to the customer. Let's say in Santa Fe, if you get propane, the cost is twice as much as natural gas in Chicago. That would mean it would cost $675 more per year for heating/cooking if one were to live here. To me that's not that much of a trade-off

In the HVAC biz. I get all that and gladly make that trade off eventually. I just didn't know the average cost of propane. Now imagine the cost diff if you had the same heating degree days!
