I am planning to visit the area for its beautiful mountains. I was perplexed to learn that the 2 hotels I inquired about had no mountain views! Where can I get a very nice and safe hotel room with a great mountain view? Must I stay at another city nearby?
OP, note that most of the hotels on this list aren't in Santa Fe, not even close.
You can see the mountains from almost anywhere in town. You could call the Inn of the Anasazi, and see if they have any mountain view rooms. Also try Inn at Loretto, and Hotel Santa Fe.
Santa Fe isn't really terribly near the mountains. It is 7000 feet high, but you have to drive quite a ways to get up into actual mountains. If you want that, plan to visit Santa Fe the last week in September and drive up into the Santa Fe National Forest, which is spectacular when the Aspens turn. The drive will take you about an hour or so from town. Santa Fe itself is for art galleries and shopping and restaurants. It's really a tourist trap, hugely expensive, though very charming. Take a lot of money.

In fact, I would say that the city is too close to the mountains for mountain views, because of the 'false summit' effect. The best views tend to be from 5-10 miles from the base, otherwise you are just looking up at the foothills, with the true summits hidden behind them.
